Rochelle Costi Brazilian, born 1961. Photographer and multi-media artist. She graduated from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUC / RS), Porto Alegre, in 1981. The following year she spent six months in Belo Horizonte, attending art workshops at Guignard School and a extension on 19th century photographic processes at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).
Back in Porto Alegre, she makes installations with photographs and objects she collects, such as ashtrays, suitcases, glasses and lamps. In 1983, she performed the solo exhibition “Tentativa de Vôo”, at the Art Museum of Rio Grande do Sul Ado Malagoli (Margs) and, from then on, exhibited in other states of Brazil. At that time, she worked as a theater and music photographer.
In 1988, she moved to São Paulo, where she worked with editorial photography. She lived in London between 1991 and 1992, where she studied at the Saint Martin School of Art and Camera Work. The work in newspapers and magazines allows her to contact with different environments, which stimulates her research on private spaces and results photographic series in which she registers facades and interiors of houses. She participated in the 24th International Biennial of São Paulo in 1998, and the 6th and 7th Havana Biennials in 1997 and 1999, among other international exhibitions. In 1997, she received the Marc Ferrez Photography Prize from the National Art Foundation (Funarte) and, three years later, the Arts Vitae Foundation.
