BIBLIOGRAPHY ARTWORKS

Jonathan Hernánde (Mexican,1972) His work is a conceptual investigation into both the physical and symbolic structures that order contemporary experience. He reflects on language. city structures such as roads and lampposts. images from the mass media. and commerce, creating a oeuvre in which the substructure of various systems or linkages between them are revealed. He resists. however, offering definitive conclusions, allowing the viewer to create associations between the various images and contexts he creates, a process that inevitably generates more questions tan answers. In earlier works dealing primarily with the built environment and the natural world. Hernandez deftly skirts the line between humor and critique, pointing out the absurdity of modern society in series such as Conozca Mexico (1996-2000) and Real Estate (2000-2004). In his more recent collage work Hernandez creates what he calls "detonations," which are a "kind of ping-pong game between events, context, and circumstances that heightens the power and meaning of things." In these images he addresses the machinations of political power and symbolism, as well as broader themes such as language, the sublime forces of technology and destruction, as well as the consumption and circulation of images. Hernandez creates tenuous webs for the viewer, allowing the power of juxtaposition and suggestion to generate insights and new ways of understanding the world around us.
